Áine Macken-Walsh is a Research Officer
at Teagasc’s Rural Economy and Development Programme
(REDP). Her primary interests are in cultural sociology
with a specific focus on agriculture. Áine joined REDP
in 2006, coming from the National University of Ireland,
Galway where she worked on a variety of agriculture
focused research projects. Her MA and PhD, supported by
DG EuropeAid (2002) and the EC 5th Framework Programme
(2003-2006), focused on rights-based approaches to rural
development, agriculture, and the EU governance and
rural development model.
Áine’s research activity is centred
on exploring the socio-cultural dimensions of questions
such as farmers’ adoption of technologies; farmers’
engagement in joint farming ventures; and multi-actor
participatory processes to assist agricultural
extension. Áine is collaborating with Teagasc extension
personnel, industry stakeholders, and international and
national academic partners on this research programme
Áine is Adjunct Lecturer at the
School of Political Science and Sociology, NUI Galway
contributing post-graduate modules on gendered
perspectives on agriculture and qualitative methods. She
is currently co-supervising five PhD research projects
funded by Teagasc’s Walsh Fellowship Scheme with
collaborators at the School of Political Science and
Sociology, NUI Galway; School of Agriculture, University
College Dublin; the Department of Communications and
Systems, Open Univeristy, UK; and the Centre for
Cooperative Studies, University College Cork.
